Sandakphu Trek, Nepal- West Bengal  Adventure

Destination(s): sandakphu

Trip created: 17 Sep 2009, updated: 22 Mar 2010

Overview

Snow, Peaks, Valleys, vegetation, rivers sense to adventure, you name it has got it. we traveled 50 odd km on foot, carrying your luggage,in a trek which stretched over 5 days along the nepal-india border . The trail is partly green and partly snow covered, which depends on the season in which you visit this place. But overall this trek offers an experience which cannot be paralleled. On the way there are small sleepy villages, where the local people play tremendous hosts. Away from worldly pleasures and any sort of commercialization, sandakphu is a perfect getway with friends.

Route

We took a train from kolkata to New jalpaiguri. From there we booked a cab to reach Manebhanjung, which was the starting point of our trek. The trek ended in Rimbik from where we booked another cab to reach back to New Jalpaiguri from where we had a train back to kolkata

Stay/Hotels

It was a week long trek with night halts in villages where we stayed in small huts turned into guest houses. Nice,Neat and cozy

Food/Restaurants

The local people served food prepared by them in their own kitchen.

Budget

Budget break up: 5-6 k per head

Must Visit, Must Do

Sandakphu, Phalut (Best possible view of Mt Everest), white water river rafting (malli) can be squeezed in the middle

Best Time

The trek has different beauty at different times. Avoid June-July(excessive rain) and Nov-Jan(excessive snow). In Feb - March & Aug-Oct you will find so much of snow that you'll get tired of it. Not so much in April-May though but you will be mesmerized by the beauty of the valley, snow covered peaks and beautiful flowers

Suggestions

Things to carry: Try to carry as less stuff as possible because you need to carry it all on your back in a strenuous trek. Chocolates, Medicines, Glucon D, Trekking Boots, water bottle, winter wear are a must though

General Suggestions: The overall trek is of medium difficulty and generally suited for young people, avoid going there with family. There is no mobile signal and no electricity, so keep enough batteries for the camera.
